They say age is just a number, which is true for Johnny Knoxville (Jackass) who plays 86-year-old Irving Zisman in the lewd and shocking comedy Bad Grandpa.From staged funerals, wedding crashing, public defecation and fornication with vending machines — there aren’t really any lines this movie didn’t cross. But was there enough humor and plot to redeem this otherwise absurd and unapologetic movie?


In Bad Grandpa, Zisman’s wife passes away, but that won’t stop the geriatric joker from having a good time. He begins a quest to find love in all the wrong places when his daughter and 8-year-old grandson ruin the party. Zisman’s grandson Billy (Jackson Nicoll, Funsize) needs to live with his father after his mom is incarcerated for violating her parole.It’s now up to Zisman to travel cross-country to reunite Billy with his terrible excuse for a father. To put it mildly, they get into some trouble along the way.If you’re expecting anything other than mindless humor from this film, stay far, far away. However, if you don’t mind some crude humor to go along with some outrageous antics, this film is for you.

The Zisman character originated in the hit MTV show Jackass, and was by far one of the funniest segments from the show. Taking that character and giving him an hour and a  half was a smart move. The main difference between Bad Grandpa and Jackass is that this film tried to have a plot amid all the mischief and jaw-dropping humor.The people’s reactions captured by hidden cameras were just as funny as the pranks and foolery. From shock, anger and confusion to laughter, watching people react in their own way was just as much the entertainment as the movie itself. At times, Bad Grandpa was hard to watch because it made the audience feel so uncomfortable due to the awkwardness of the staged situations.

On a negative spectrum, there are a lot of problems with this type of humor. Subjecting adolescents to obscene language and adult situations is in bad taste in this reviewer’s opinion. Even though Billy had some hilarious lines, it just seemed like bad parenting. Also, ruining people’s days for the sake of a scene pushes boundaries in an undesirable way. I truly hope scenes such as the ruined wedding were staged or that these people were compensated handsomely for their trouble, because it’s just awful when looking at the reality of the situation.All-in-all, the film gets the job done. It’s stupid and immature, which is exactly what it was trying to be and it was laugh-out-loud hilarious the whole time.The scenes were clever and raunchy, the pranks were original and big kudos go to the makeup artists who made Knoxville look perfect as an old man.
